Bordering Botswana, Lianshulu Lodge nestles beneath a canopy of shady Jackalberry and Mangosteen trees, on the banks of the meandering Kwando River. Here, in the heart of the Mudumu National Park, dry and sweltering Mopane woodlands meet the allure of a fragile Kwando wetland ecosystem, a forgotten land, largely untouched by the influence of man. The Lodge is a Lozi name meaning “The place of springhares” and is borrowed from Lianshulu Village, which is about 25 km (16 mi.) south of our turn-off on the gravel road. Lianshulu is currently the only private lodge to have a concession inside a national park in Namibia. Wildlife concentrations are at their highest during the winter months, whilst nature shows its most lush and vibrant side during summer, with bird watching being at its phenomenal best. Around 400 species of birds have been recorded in the East Caprivi. Although game populations fluctuate through the seasons, many typical savannah and woodland species occur in the area, with Elephant and Hippo being particularly abundant. Mudumu National Park is approx. 80 000 ha. (197 690 acres) or 800 km2 (310sq mi.) of which Lianshulu Lodge’s concession is 800 ha. (1 976.9 acres) or 8 km2 (3,1sq mi.).
